The Ember Days have been lost in the new calendar but interestingly, they are in the new Ordinariate Missal. The Embers occur four time per year. Perhaps, this is a recognition by the Church that the reform of Paul VI was in fact, a disaster that we can see corrected in the near future, as far as the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite is concerned. When you read below the text of today's liturgy, it should bring home all the more the evil these men did in their destruction of the liturgy. When you sing it as I did a few years ago, you will realise it even more.
Meanwhile, I shall shun the reformed as often as possible and attend the traditional Roman Rite where one does not have to live a life of liturgical regret for what these malefactors did to our liturgical life; and if you like the Japanese delicacy, tempura, thank the Church for Her ancient liturgy.
The Ember days are true Catholic tradition dating actually
dating back to the Apostles, (Pope Leo The Great claims it was instituted by
the Apostles). Pope Callistus (217-222)
in the “Liber Pontificalis” has laws ordering all to observe a fast three times
a year to counteract the hedonistic and pagan Roman rites praying for:
-a good harvest (June),
-a good vintage (September),
-a good seeding in December.
By the time of Pope Gelasius, (492-496), he already writes
about there being four times a years, including Spring. He also permitted the conferring of
priesthood and deaconship on the Saturdays of Ember week. This practice was mostly celebrated around
Rome, from Pope Gelasius’ time, they began to spread throughout the Church.
St. Augustin brought them to England and the Carolingians
into Gaul and Germany. In the eleventh
century, Spain adopted them.
It was not until Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085), that these
Ember days were prescribed for the whole Catholic Church as days of fast and
abstinence. He placed these “four mini
Lents” consisting of three days; Wednesday, Friday and Saturday:
-after St. Lucy’s Feast Dec. 13,
-after Ash Wednesday,
-following Whitsunday, (Pentecost),
-and after Sept. 14, the Exaltation of the Cross.
The purpose of these “mini Lents” were to pray, fast and to
thank God for the gifts He gives us through nature. They follow the four seasons of the year with
the beauty and uniqueness of each particular season. They are here for us to teach us to use,
with moderation, what God gives us through nature, and to also share these
gifts with the poor.
Traditionally, these are the days on which priests were ordained.

II Thess. 2. 1-8
Lesson from
the second Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Thessalonians.
[Let us
prepare for the near approach of our Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ, and for the
coming of our Judge.]
Brethren,
We beseech you by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of our gathering
together unto Him: that you be not easily moved from your sense, nor be
terrified, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by epistle as sent from us, as
if the day of the Lord were at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for
unless there come a revolt first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of
perdition who opposeth and is lifted up above all that is called God or that is
worshipped, so that he sitteth in the temple of God showing himself as if he
were God. Remember you not that, when I was yet with you, I told you these
things? And now you know what withholdeth, that he may be revealed in his time.
For the mystery of iniquity already worketh: only that he who now holdeth do
hold, until he be taken out of the way. And then that wicked one shall be
revealed, whom the Lord Jesus shall kill with the spirit of His mouth, and
shall destroy with the brightness of His coming.

GOSPEL ¤
Luke 3. 1-6
†
Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Luke.
Now in the
fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor
of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch
of Iturea and the country of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilina,
under the high priests Annas and Caiphas: the word of the Lord was made unto
John, the son of Zachary, in the desert. And he came into all the country about
the Jordan, preaching the baptism of penance for the remission of sins, as it
was written in the book of the sayings of Isaias the prophet: A voice of one
crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord: make straight His
paths: every valley shall be filled; and every mountain and hill shall be brought
low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways plain: and all
flesh shall see the salvation of God.

The Common
Preface
It is truly
meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in

God, through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the
Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The heavens and the heavenly
hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to
celebrate it. Together with them, we entreat Thee, that Thou mayest bid our
voices also to be admitted, while we say in lowly praise: Sanctus, Sanctus,
Sanctus…

We beseech
Thee, O Lord, our God, that the most holy Mysteries, which Thou hast given us
for a safeguard of our renewal, may become our remedy both now and for time to
come. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee
in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

Wonderful! What a catastrophe Rome threw away our precious liturgy in the name of ecumenism and the desire to be all things to all men, but not to Jesus Christ. All foisted on the faithful by a secularised/liberal clergy who have shown themselves to be unworthy of their ordination vows & the offices they hold in the hierarchy. Is no-one capable of showing them the door? Let's get back to the proper Tridentine Mass of ages, the restoration of the seven sacraments and proper catechising and stop all this malarkey.
Vox, thank you for promoting via this post (and additional posts) the tremendous spiritual riches available to us via Traditional Roman liturgy. Deo gratias that Catholics may also tap into and benefit from that tradition via the Ordinariates.
The greatest Christmas gift that anybody could give to family and friends is a TLM video, TLM Missal...a book that introduces them to the TLM...even a newspaper article, magazine article, something that introduces them to the TLM...or information about the Ordinariates...introduce them to Eastern Catholicism...anything that places family and friends upon the path to Holy Tradition.
Any open-minded person will at least realize that the liturgical reform (revolution) has robbed he or she of the Church's ancient liturgical/spiritual tradition. Even attaching oneself to the TLM via video as well as acquiring information about Holy Tradition would enhance one's spiritual life.
The bottom line is that we must attach ourselves to and promote Holy Tradition.
Thank you again, Vox.

I read where there was a need for English Propers for the Traditional (1962 Missale Romanum - Tridentine) Latin Mass, so I will post the prayers and readings each day at http://tridentine-mass.blogspot.com/ Check it out if you like! Thank you and God bless+
I realize that they following may be a pipe-dream. Should anybody chide me about the following...hey, I understand.
The Jubilee of Mercy is upon us. In keeping with the theme of mercy and reconciliation, I hope and pray that His Holiness Pope Francis will convoke an Assisi-like gathering of Catholics attached to the TLM.
I would even like to see Pope Francis include leaders of the Ordinariates...leaders of the "reform the reform" movement...the leading lights among Catholics who realize that the Latin Church is in dire need of liturgical improvement.
FSSP, ICK, SSPX, Ordinariates, reform-the-reform...Catholics from "independent" chapels...Eastern Catholics...everybody who wishes to contribute to the promotion of the Church's ancient liturgical heritage, and who wishes to aid, in particular, the Latin Church to restore Her Traditional liturgical beauty would gather with Pope Francis.
I realize that there are some groups who consider themselves as the only "true" Catholics on earth. They denounce the FSSP, ICK, SSPX...anybody who is in communion with the "heretic" Pope Francis is a "heretic". They would reject such a gathering. But said folks are few in number.
Everybody else who loves the Church and wishes to launch a renewed liturgical movement rooted in Holy Tradition would gather with Pope Francis. Such a gathering would produce an abundance of good spiritual fruit for Holy Mother Church.
We have had the talks and discussions about the environment, Communion for divorced and remarried Catholics...Moslems this, Moslems that...homosexuals, homosexuals...okay, fine...
Now let's move on to liturgy. Let us move onto something that can repair the collapsed state of the (Latin) Church. It is time for a major discussion in regard to liturgy.
Pope Francis could initiate the much-needed discussion/liturgical movement in question. He possesses the awesome authority to do so. I hope and pray that he does.

I wish to reiterate that I have felt very upbeat and blessed this morning by Vox and this post of his. It is always beautiful to read about, contemplate, and be blessed by the Church's liturgical Tradition. I was very hopeful after I had read the following from Vox:
"Ember Days have been lost in the new calendar but interestingly, they are in the new Ordinariate Missal. Perhaps, this is a recognition by the Church that the reform of Paul VI was in fact, a disaster that we can see corrected in the near future, as far as the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite is concerned."
That is something about which to be hopeful. Vox, thank you again.

Thank you for educating us. The devil focussed on destruction of communal worship, especially the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, as the quickest avenue to destroying Faith and morals.
