I remember the Doge of Venice granting Shylock's petition, "Yes you may take a pound of Flesh but no blood". At that time the Council of Trent had insisted Holy Communion could be received in one species contrary to the beliefs of the reformers. Many people of my age and time in England believed this showed William was a Catholic and believed Elizabeth knew and knew of the riots that would follow his execution.
