On March 6 Cuomo insisted, “The overall risk level of the
novel coronavirus in New York remains low” and said, “We have more people in
this country dying from the flu than we have dying from coronavirus.” As late
as March 8, Cuomo, instead of advising people to stay away from the subway,
advised New Yorkers to seek out less-crowded subway cars, the mass-transit
equivalent of saying, “Let them eat cake.”
What may turn out to have been Cuomo’s worst unforced error was his March 25 order that nursing homes must accept patients who carried the coronavirus. This now looks like setting off a series of time bombs in New York State’s elder-care facilities, and Cuomo didn’t reverse this policy until May 11. The governor protested at that time that only 12 percent of New York State COVID deaths had occurred in nursing homes, but we are now learning that many people who died after falling ill in nursing homes have not been counted in the official stats. One such facility reported seven COVID deaths to the state, the New York Postreported, but the actual number of deaths there over a five-week period this spring was 76. New York is literally burying this problem: Many New Yorkers who died in nursing homes were never tested for the virus. Nursing-home staffers told the Post far more people are dying at long-term-care facilities than in a normal spring and that a coverup is underway. There is now a bipartisan group in Albany calling for an investigation, but Cuomo replied, “This is going to be a period where we don’t play gratuitous politics.”
The Reverend Robert Reddy of the Archdiocese of Toronto has passed away. He was in residence at St. Mary's in Barrie and was formerly the pastor at St. Andrew's Church in Brechin, Holy Family in Whitby and at St. Mary Immaculate in Richmond Hill, Ontario which is where I came to know him. Father Reddy was a great priest, faithful, kind and doctrinally sound. While not offering the traditional Mass himself, he was a friend of tradition in every way. He welcomed the traditional Mass at St. Mary Immaculate by his Associate Pastor and never turned down a request by the Toronto Traditional Mass Society - Una Voce Toronto - for the use of the church for Feast Day Masses.
I will miss him.

Monday, May 4, Mons. Carlo Maria Viganò called His Eminence the Card. Sarah on the phone, to propose that he sign the appeal. Taking reading the text, the Cardinal stated: "It seems to me a very serious matter. I think this appeal will do very well, because it will make us think and take a stand. I agree that this should be published as soon as possible.' Mons. Viganò then asked His Eminence if he intended to sign, which confirmed: "Yes, I give my agreement to put my name, because it is a struggle that we must wage together, not only for the Catholic Church but for all humanity."
At 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, the employees mons. Viganò presented to the Associated Press, the press and a list of Catholic blogs the text of the Appeal and the names of the main signatories, including that of the Card. Sarah.
At 17:48 Monsignor Viganò received a text message from the Cardinal: "Dear Excellency, as I am still in operation in the Roman Curia some friends advised me not to sign the Appeal you proposed. Maybe it would be better to remove my name this time. I'm so sorry. You know my friendship and my closeness to your person. Thank you for your understanding. Robert card. Sarah.
Being engaged in the dissemination of the Appeal and in answering the calls of journalists, Mons. Viganò could only read the message later. At about 19:35 the Cardinal phoned Monsignor Viganò and asked for the text to be removed. Desolate, His Excellency took care to point out to the Cardinal that the Appeal and signatures had been circulated for more than four hours. In the course of the conversation, however, no official cancellation was requested, nor a "joint communiqué" in which news was made about the Cardinal's decision to withdraw his membership.
While acknowledging to His Eminence the broader power to reverse his decision at any time, and understanding the strong pressures to which the Cardinal is exposed because of his duties at the Roman Curia, his choice to post messages on Twitter has placed Mons. He felt that he had to specify what had happened, so as to avoid prejudice against his person or his associates.

In my continuing effort to be fair and balanced in the matter of ChurchMilitant's reporting on allegations of sexual abuse and cover-up by some in the Society of St. Pius X, I present here, the latest response from officials in the Society and comment.
The scourge of perversion, predation and sexual abuse in the Church must be cut out. We know that it has reached the highest levels. Theodore McCarrick is not the first prelate to have been found out, only the most prominent and recent. The cover-up of McCarrick's actions even reached Francis Bergoglio himself. Why would we doubt that even in the Society, sodomites embedded themselves? Others, for whatever reason, whether in denial and acting in good faith to prevent scandal, did not make public reports. Did some act maliciously? Maybe.
As we were told by St. Gregory the Great; "It is better to let scandal arise than truth to be suppressed."
Just as this disease has infected our dioceses and religous orders and does not change the truth of the Faith, so it is that any malefactors in the Society of St. Pius X, whomever they may be, do not change the good work done by 99.9% of the priests, nuns and religous and the faithful Catholic communities.
You are no doubt familiar with the recent public release of a survey to bishops from the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith on the situation and development of Summorum Pontificum. Many are seeing this as an omen of bad things to come and are losing their heads.
I do not share this conspiracy theory. Not that I trust anything coming out of the Vatican, notwithstanding.
Let me just briefly comment on the Archdiocese of Toronto and three of its suffrage dioceses of Hamilton, London and St. Catharines. There are nearly thirty priests whom I know who on Sundays or other days or at least privately, offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the traditional Rite and I am not referring here to the Society of St. Pius X which operates at least four chapels in Toronto, New Hamburg, Orillia and St. Catharines. In the Diocese of London there are two growing communities in Windsor and St. Thomas. In St. Catharines, the Fraternity of St. Peter and a sprinkling of ad hoc diocesan Masses. In Hamilton, the Mass is every Sunday in Kitchener and Hamilton and less frequent in Brantford. In Toronto proper there are five every Sunday plus at least three other parishes where at least once a week, a priest offers the traditional rite. The Triduum had been held for six years, though the planned one this past March, was of course, cancelled. The Cardinal Archbishop, Thomas Collins, has always been supportive. Many of the Ordinandi of the last decade have offered the Holy Mass according to the traditional Form. This is not going to change and there are, I believe, eight ordinations this year for Toronto. There is no gain for this Archdiocese to attack these communities.
There is a lot of hysteria in this matter. Don't buy into it.
