In the the modern world we often hyperspecialize. As a result of this, I think we can suffer from myopia.
Some knowledge of the events surrounding World War II might be necessary. In 1942 an agreement was made that Communism is merely a misunderstanding of Christianity where Nationalism was seen as incompatible.
I think that this is at the root of the problem. By not recognizing that Nationalism is foundationally based upon charity to a family group (amici), we have focused too heavily on charity to the stranger (inamici).
We have come to no longer holding Christ's admonitions:
