"Rouse Your anger, pour out wrath, humble the enemy, scatter the foe.

From the Fourth Lesson of Ember Saturday.

Ecclus. 36:1-10
Raise Your hand against the heathen, that they may realize Your power. As You have used us to show them Your holiness, so now use them to show us Your glory. Thus they will know, as we know, that there is no God but You, O Lord. Give new signs and work new wonders; show forth the splendor of Your right hand and arm; rouse Your anger, pour out wrath, humble the enemy, scatter the foe. Hasten the day, bring on the time; that they may declare Your wonderful works, O Lord, our God.

I can't help but see the liturgy's readings often speaking to our context within the Church and to the enemies of God in the world who uphold the interests of the powerful, destroying lives from the womb to the tomb. God will not stand by and be mocked. Their illusory power, financial oppression and greed, their trampling of the poor and vulnerable will be utterly destroyed. Then God will lead His humble remnant to peace: "Then they will pasture and lie down, and no one will make them afraid." (Zeph 3:13)
