What Does Change in Church’s Death Penalty Teaching Mean for LGBT People?

Church teaching can change.

While many of us knew this before, we’ve just received news that is contemporary proof positive.  From The New York Times:

“Pope Francis has declared that the death penalty is wrong in all cases, a definitive change in church teaching that is likely to challenge faithful Catholic politicians, judges and officials in the United States and other countries who have argued that their church was not entirely opposed to capital punishment. . . .

“The church also says it will work “with determination” for the abolition of capital punishment worldwide.”

It’s important for Catholic advocates for LGBT equality to take note of this change because for decades Catholic opponents of LGBT equality argued that it is impossible to change church teaching.  They often pointed to the fact that condemnations of  same-sex relationships were inscribed in the Catechism, and so were not open for discussion or change. Yet, the teaching on the death penalty is in the Catechism, too, and, in fact, to make this change in teaching, it was the text of the Catechism that Francis changed.  Here’s the announcement from the Vatican press office:

New revision of number 2267 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church on the death penalty – Rescriptum “ex Audentia SS.mi”, 02.08.2018

The Supreme Pontiff Francis, in the audience granted on 11 May 2018 to the undersigned Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has approved the following new draft of no. 2267 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, arranging for it to be translated into various languages and inserted in all the editions of the aforementioned Catechism.

The death penalty

2267. Recourse to the death penalty on the part of legitimate authority, following a fair trial, was long considered an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good.

Today, however, there is an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes. In addition, a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state. Lastly, more effective systems of detention have been developed, which ensure the due protection of citizens but, at the same time, do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption.

Consequently, the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that “the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person”,^[1] and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide.

The New York Times explained what was changed by this revision:

“In the catechism promoted by St. John Paul II, in 1992, the death penalty was allowed if it was ‘the only practicable way to defend the lives of human beings effectively against the aggressor.’ “

What is also interesting is how the Vatican news service explained the change,  In their news story, they included the following section under an important subhead:

Revision in continuity with preceding Magisterium

In the Letter to the Bishops  Cardinal Ladaria [prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith] explained that the revision of n. 2267 of the CCC  [Catechism of the Catholic Church] “expresses an authentic development of doctrine that is not in contradiction with the prior teachings of the Magisterium” and said “these teachings, in fact, can be explained in the light of the primary responsibility of the public authority to protect the common good in a social context in which the penal sanctions were understood differently, and had developed in an environment in which it was more difficult to guarantee that the criminal could not repeat his crime”.

So, the change is not a contradiction, even though it is the opposite of what came before it? Hmmmm.

What does this death penalty news mean for Catholic advocates for LGBT equality?  A few things.

First, we now have a clear, explicit contemporary example of church teaching changing, and also a look into how it can be done: with a papal change to the Catechism.

Second,  we can see that the process that brought about this change has been decades of theological debate and discussion, and not just a papal whim.  That means the theological and even ecclesial discussions and debates right now about LGBT people have great potential to shape future changes in church teaching in regard to those topics.

Third, the death penalty is condemned because it violates the human dignity of a person.  In Ladaria’s “Letter to the Bishops” explaining the change in teaching, he quotes Pope Francis: “no matter how serious the crime that has been committed, the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and the dignity of the person.”  The dignity of the human person is the same foundation upon which many of the arguments for LGBT equality are based in theology, so seeing this teaching promoted more vigorously by Pope Francis and other church leaders is a positive step for Catholic LGBT topics.

Fourth, Pope Francis emphasis that human dignity is not eradicated despite whatever condition a person may be in highlights an important theme of his papacy which has been helpful for pastoral ministry to LGBT people: Because everyone has inherent human dignity, the Church should be open and welcoming to all people, regardless of whether or not their lives conform to church teaching in other areas.  The church should not leave anyone out.

Fifth, the quote from Ladaria in the indented excerpt above explains that one of the reasons for the change  in teaching is a new social context that has new understandings of punishment.  Again, this development bodes well for change in Catholic LGBT issues because society has been witnessing a tremendous change in social context of LGBT people, as well as new understandings of sexuality and personhood.

Sixth, and perhaps most directly related to this new and strong condemnation of the death penalty from the Catholic hierarchy, is that this new teaching can be used to protect the lives of LGBT people in nations where they are criminalized and subject to the death penalty.  This new teaching from Pope Francis comes with a promise that the Church will work “with determination” for the death penalty’s “abolition worldwide.”  Ladaria’s “Letter” concludes by reinforcing this point:

“The new formulation of number 2267 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church desires to give energy to a movement towards a decisive commitment to favor a mentality that recognizes the dignity of every human life and, in respectful dialogue with civil authorities, to encourage the creation of conditions that allow for the elimination of the death penalty where it is still in effect.”

If church leaders in fact follow through with this promise, the result can greatly help the LGBT people who are most oppressed in our world.

Of course, what would be really good is if the Vatican simply condemned the criminalization of LGBT people, regardless of the punishment–a cause for which New Ways Ministry has been campaigning for several years.  Such a condemnation would not even require a change in church teaching, as  the church, even in the Catechism, forbids discrimination against and oppression of LGBT people.  It would only take the Vatican leaders developing the political will to do so.

That would be another great change to celebrate in the Church!

The Bishops who remained and continues to remain silent about McCarrick are complicit in a crime

The New York Times has reported on the disgraceful coverup of the homosexual predator Cardinal, Timothy McCarrick. There is no need to write more here of that filthy monster, the label name at the bottom can take the reader to the history which I have written about this pathetic man. From his long known homosexual predator life to his illegal lobbying for the election of Bergoglio, it is legion.

In the Times article; "He Preyed on Men Who Wanted to Be Priests, Then He Became a Cardinal," the times reveals one of the seminarians who this pervert McCarrick went after. 

As a young man studying to be a priest in the 1980s, Robert Ciolek was flattered when his brilliant, charismatic bishop in Metuchen, N.J., Theodore E. McCarrick, told him he was a shining star, cut out to study in Rome and rise high in the church.
 Bishop McCarrick began inviting him on overnight trips, sometimes alone and sometimes with other young men training to be priests. There, the bishop would often assign Mr. Ciolek to share his room, which had only one bed. The two men would sometimes say night prayers together, before Bishop McCarrick would make a request — “come over here and rub my shoulders a little”— that extended into unwanted touching in bed.

Matt C. Abbott wrote years ago about the pervert sodomite predator Cardinal and later took the column down. I read it archived a number of years ago. Now, Abbott has named the man who was the reason he hid the column originally. Former priest Bart Aslin wrote to Matt and provided a full disclosure of his history.

Vatican Monsignor Carlo Capella finally arrested on child pornography charges

The highly placed source and rumour first disclosed on Twitter yesterday by this writer at 11:05 EDT before other Catholic media has been confirmed. Trust me, there is more to come over the next few weeks.

A Canada-wide warrant was issued by the RCMP for his arrest as reported then on Vox Cantoris, it is not known if a formal extradition request was made by the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs.

In his letter, Long, a Franciscan, writes about now each should vote according to their feelings and not by being a properly formed Catholic.

He actually blasphemes the Holy Spirit when he suggests, that the "Spirit" is saying something through the "signs of the times" that would test the truth of Holy Scripture and Catholic doctrine.

The Holy Spirit is not guiding this debate in Australia for Catholics to suddenly accept marriage within the same sex. The Holy Spirit is not a liar, but this Bishop, Vincent Long Van Nguyen is a liar, a deceiver and no doubt, a homosexualist.

What does this stupid man think that two men do together in bed? Just as with James Martin, they set up "straw men" and want you to believe it is all about love. Pastoral letter on the same-sex marriage postal survey

Dear sisters and brothers,

As I write to you, the national debate on same-sex civil marriage is in full swing. It is an issue that many feel passionate about and hence, it has potential to polarise the community. I appeal to all Catholics in the Diocese of Parramatta to conduct this dialogue with a deep sense of respect for all concerned, and for the opinion and decision that each person is free to make.

It is important to remember from the very outset that the postal survey is about whether or not Australians want the legal definition of civil marriage changed to include same-sex couples. It is not a referendum on sacramental marriage as understood by the Catholic Church.

Many years ago, divorce was legalised in Australia; but this change did not alter the law of the Church. Therefore, whatever the outcome of the survey or the eventual legislation by the government, the Church will continue to hold that marriage is a natural institution established by God to be a permanent union between one man and one woman, directed both to mutual companionship and to the formation of a family in which children are born and nurtured.

For many Catholics, the issue of same-sex marriage is not simply theoretical but deeply personal. These may be same-sex attracted people themselves or that may be the case with their relatives and friends. In such cases, they are torn between their love for the Church and their love for their same-sex attracted child, grandchild, sibling, cousin, friend or neighbour.

As your bishop, I wish to reiterate the commitment I made at my installation: “I am committed to make the church in Parramatta the house for all peoples, a church where there is less an experience of exclusion but more an encounter of radical love, inclusiveness and solidarity.” As a community of disciples, we seek to accommodate, accompany and care for one another irrespective of sexual orientation, marital status and situation.

I invite all Catholics in our Diocese to exercise our responsibility as citizens to engage in this community discernment. It should not be a matter of a simple answer Yes or No to the postal survey. It should be an opportunity for us to witness to our deep commitment to the ideal of Christian marriage. But it should also be an opportunity for us to listen to what the Spirit is saying through the signs of the times.

Throughout much of history, our gay and lesbian (or LGBTI) brothers and sisters have often not been treated with respect, sensitivity and compassion. Regrettably, the Church has not always been a place where they have felt welcomed, accepted and loved. Thus, regardless of the outcome of the survey, we must commit ourselves to the task of reaching out to our LGBTI brothers and sisters, affirming their dignity and accompanying them on our common journey towards the fullness of life and love in God.

Let us pray, discern and act with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. Catholics, in keeping with the tradition of the Church, are asked to exercise their consciences, ensuring that they are informed as they come to exercise their democratic rights in the coming postal survey.

James Martin, S.J. - a man crying out in desperation for attention and secretly for help

One could blog nearly daily on the ravaged mind of James Martin, S.J., and the perverse, corrupted doctrine he bleats on Twitter, Facebook and in various media publications. Martin has been covered numerous times on this blog. Lately, I've avoided writing and instead, just end up shaking my head in disgust and in sadness for what this poor sick man has become.

Given his volume of activity on social media, one could rightly ask, "Does this priest ever pray his Office, or Rosary, does he spend an hour in adoration?" I think the answer must be, "no." How can it be otherwise? If a priest was rising early to read his Office and praying, and ministering to souls, and offering Mass well and hearing confessions, how could he have time to be as active on social media as Martin? How could he write that which he does in what can only be described as a pathological, deranged and obsessive promotion of homosexualism and an outright rejection of the Church's teaching on the grotesque sin of sodomy, effeminacy and same-sex behaviour.

In a recent interview at Fordham University, Martin has gone perhaps further to reveal the severely deranged and poisoned mind to the point where it can only be concluded that James Martin of the Society of Jesus must be possessed by the Devil, Satan himself. No Catholic priest, servant of Our Lord Jesus Christ could every state that which this wretched man does without being possessed by the Evil One. 

Martin and his cronies who leave comments here will no doubt call me a "hater." 

The truth is this; the real "hater" is James Martin. Martin hates himself, he hates Christ and His Church and the truth. He hates the men trapped in a sorrowful and suffering life of homosexuality. These men deserve our love because they are children of the same God. They deserve the truth, that the God who loves them does not expect them to live as they do. They were not born this way. Those who believe, this, who promote this, are liars.

In the Fordham interview, with Patrick Hornbeck, the Chairman of the Department of Theology, Hornbeck makes it clear that he is "married" to his "husband." How has Timothy Dolan, Cardinal Archbishop of New York not removed this man from his position? Let him sue. Take the lawsuit, pay him if you have to, but get him out.

In the interview, Martin states:

“He (a former Religious and friend of Martin) came out and has been with his partner for 20 years. His partner has a fairly serious illness that is at times extremely serious and requires a lot of attention. Mark has cared for him for, I think, 15–20 years now. And one of the questions I would like the institutional Church to reflect on is: 'Is this not love?'

"I have a hard time imagining how even the most traditionalist, homophobic, closed-minded Catholic cannot look at my (active homosexual) friend and say, 'That is a loving act, and that is a form of love that I don't understand but I have to reverence."

Martin dares to use the word "reverence" which has as a synonym, "adoration," something due only to Almighty God and states that we need to use this proper reverence to the people who practice acts of depravity. 

Let us be clear, Martin has set up a "straw-man." He wants you to believe it is all about "love." Of course, one friend should care for another in his sickness, that is what we should all do. But notice how this deceitful priest blends that idea of fraternal love with sodomitical debauchery. What does he think these two men do? It is not about "love."

Where are his Superiors?

James Martin is on his way to Hell. He must repent publicly of his grievous error and do penance. He must live a life of quiet reparation for what he has done to so many souls. Objectively speaking, if James Martin dies tonight, he will end up in Hell. He will be greeted there by those whom he deceived and joined sooner or later by those who failed to correct him.

Martin may interpret this as hate. The truth is, it is out of love for him and his priesthood that this is written.

Does Bergoglio of Rome support legalised and recognised same sex civil unions?

“Marriage between people of the same sex? ‘Marriage’ is a historical word. Always in humanity, and not only within the Church, it’s between a man and a woman… we cannot change that. In books also, children are learning that they can choose their own sex. Why is sex, being a woman or a man, a choice and not a fact of nature? This favors this mistake. But let’s say things as they are: Marriage is between a man and a woman. This is the precise term. Lets call unions between the same sex ‘civil unions’.”

No, Father James Martin, S.J. - there are no "gay" Saints

Father James Martin, a Jesuit, Editor of America Magazine and now a Vatican hack in the truest sense, has recently said that some saints were "probably gay," and that we will be surprised when we get to heaven (please God!) to be "greeted by LGBT men and women." 

Let us be perfectly clear. Father James Martin is not a stupid man and I cannot judge if he is evil, but I can state without any doubt that what this Jesuit has said, is evil. Nah, I'm wrong, he could only be evil for saying such a wretched thing.

There are no LGBT people in heaven.

There are no sodomites in heaven.

There are no lesbians in heaven.

There are no fornicators, adulterers, murderers, liars or rapists in heaven.

There are Saints washed in the blood of Christ. There are men and women who suffered and overcame sin and triumphed through the Lamb. This includes men and women who had all kinds of temptations and did not give in to them and when they did, they repented, undertook penance and triumphed over sin and then endured, or still endure, Purgatory, where the Lamb's blood gloriously washes and the Spirit's fire refines that the soul may be pure enough to stand before the Father.

What Father Martin has done is manipulative and deceitful. It is evil. It is a lie.

James Martin EssJay - the Trans Lying Jesuit or is that a Lying Trans Jesuit?

Not a day passes now without one of these demonic disciples of Satan, these of the once great and holy Jesuit Order, foaming off at the mouth lies and heresy and leading souls to Hell.

Yesterday, it was Arturo Sosa, EssJay, the newly elected Superior General who declares Jesus's words to be an afterthought and unclear, after all, there were no recorders back then, eh? What a filthy and heretical and perverted mind to conjure up such blasphemous bile.

Once again now, we have James Martin, EssJay, a man whom Michael Voris has been recently asking, if he is a "homosexual." 

This filthy malefactor cares more about political issues and ideology and his own agenda, than about saving souls for Christ, he is so deranged, so obviously unfit for the holy priesthood. These men have no faith except in the god of sodomy, they do not believe anymore in the supernatural. They are worse than modernists, as if that were even possible.

Yes, so-called "trans students" endure and suffer. They suffer at the hands of men like Martin who lie to them, who affirm them in their delusion. These people are now owed affirmation, they are owed the truth. They are not owed radical surgery and chemical alterations, they are owed love, compassion an spiritual and psychiatric therapy.

James Martin is a liar. He does not love trans people.

He actually hates them.

And he even hates himself.
