It's a loaf of bread I tell you, really it is.

Okay, I get it, it's a loaf of bread symbolizing feeding the poor, but, really?

Are people just this stupid?

It's supposed to be St. Martin de Porres. What a disgusting insult. More saintly pictures can be found here.

Or is it a subliminal clue about the intent of the artists and the people who commissioned it?

Well, I mean, there is nothing inspiring about this statue, even aside from the fact it has this absurd pose. The expression of the statue looks grim, and the child looks like an old man. It is difficult to believe this was unintended. If someone were giving someone bread, they wouldn't hold the bread this way, and hopefully not with a dead expression on their face. It's so bad, I'm not sure who would win the ugliest statue contest, this, or the original statue for Lucille Ball.

That is a horrible statue. They should remove that statue immediately, get their money back and hire a REAL artist. Another case of soul crushing Vat2 art.

It takes one,

This looks like another case of liberal projection.

This comment from Australia where I live! The minds of mankind have been wickedly manipulated since the so called "Sexual Revolution" of the 1970s! What greater idea could the enemy of souls perpetrate than to smear and defile the God given procreative desires of man until every facet of our society is impregnated with sexual innuendo. Thus rendering the sanctity of marriage; of chastity; of the innocence of childhood and practically every other holy and good thing null and void! In their place we see divorce; pornography; paedophilia; abortion and sexual wickdness in all places high and low! Maranatha Lord Jesus I beg You and put an end to all of this for once and for all! Lord have mercy!

There's a crucifix hanging in one of the parishes in my diocese that I have to avert my eyes because the folds of the linen around Christ's hips are arranged in a certain way that gives an obscene impression at first glance. I tried at first to give the artist the benefit of the doubt (it's a wood sculpture corpus), but I dunno...it's pretty blatant. They get away with it too because no one wants to mention it in case no one else notices and that way you're not planting ideas in anyone's mind that will never be forgotten (because when you see it, you see it)...but really, I do question if this sort of thing isn't done on purpose in some sort of subversive passive aggressive way. And then the next question is, who on the parish committee is attracted to this sort of thing that they want to buy it?

The statue is an outrageous tribute to pedophilia. I wonder how sick and obtuse religious conspired to make this happen.

What sick minds some people have. Took me some time to work out what the hullabaloo was about. That's really sick!

If “It’s a bad day for bakers,” it is a ruinous one for sculptors. This artist needs his eyes tested & when he receives his new spectacles a sincere repentance & a firm purpose of amendment should follow. St. Martin de Porres forgive him for he knew not what he did.

His loaf is so tiny.

RidireGaelach says
Its a subliminal image alright.
St Mels Cathedral in Longford Ireland after restoration after a major fire has a subliminal image in Station of the Cross "X" wherein Christ taken down from the cross is sodomised by a Roman soldier with the other soldier so disgusted that he holds a garment up so he cannot see. The look of estacy on the sodomiser'S face shows some great commitment to the artwork.
I'd say unintended in Longford but in keeping with the Homosexual splatters on the two stained glass windows at the rear of the Cathedral.

This is a subliminal image deliberate alright.
Here in St MEL's Cathedral in Longford Ireland, restored after a major fire, station of the cross "X" shows a Roman soldier sodomising Christ and the other soldier is so disgusted that he holds up a garment so that he cannot see the bad act.
The look of ecstasy on the Roman soldier's face as he sodomise Christ is very well done and is a tribute to the artist. I suspect it is unintended but it is in keeping with the Homosexual rainbow splatter in the two windows at the rear of the Cathedral

I chuckled...

But even St. Martin there looks like he's bored of all this Soup Kitchen theology stuff.

I think he'd rather be offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Take it down and take it out. The material used for the sculpture looks horrendous. Completely without class.

Why the outrage? Vatican itself has more naked male artwork than I've ever seen in any museum.

https://www.google.com/search?q=two+naked+males.ascending+into.heaven+vatican&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#imgrc=9Bug5PG79UxRCM:

After visiting the Vatican in September I totally understand how artisans , priests and bishops think they can incorporate this kind of stuff into their churches.

All the nude male Vatican art as well as all the examples cited here (and the state of the "Church" in general) are fueling my desire for Eastern Orthodoxy. I have yet to encounter a lewd icon.

Dear Vox - I am sorry I won't be visiting your blog anymore. Anyone who keeps comments like those of Ridire Gaelach in the combox is not worthy of my attention. Goodbye. Eirene.

Dear Irene,

I am not going to edit Mr. Ridire Gaelach's comment because I see no need to do so. He is simply describing a fact of an artist's work in the Cathedral which further highlights the article above.

In fact, at St. Mary Immaculate Church in Richmond Hill, Ontario in the Archdiocese of Toronto, I suspect that the Stations of the Cross there might be by the same, so-called, "artist." There is a similar Station as he describes. Is it really a pornographic sodomitical image or is it just my mind when I see it?

It is very similar to the picture on this article, is it an intent, or an an accident? Is it my mind that is deformed for thinking that the loaf of bread is the male genitalia or that oral sodomy is exhibited in that Station at St. Mary's in Richmond Hill or is it subliminal on the part of the artist?

The comment stands.

It is very obvious that this statue was purposely intended to be vulgar. An innocent rendering is not possible with such an unnatural pose. Period.
I don't know about the Stations mentioned above because I certainly do not wish to see such blasphemy. This was unavoidable.

You can see on Youtube "St Mels Cathedral, Longford Town, Stations of the Cross" and the offending Station " x " is at 2.36 mins into the video
