Clearly trying to distance himself from the blowback that his boss might remove the red hats from the Four Cardinals, this intellectually challenged clericalist and papal hitman has, by his seemingly backing off, doubles down.

Let's take a look at hit-man Pinto's statement, shall we?

They have written to the pope and that is correct and legitimate. But, after there did not come [from the pope] an answer after a few weeks, they published the case. That is a slap in the face. The pope can choose to take counsel with his cardinals; but that is something different from imposing upon him a counsel.

The Cardinals followed Scripture. They addressed the matter privately. When that did not elicit a response, they took it "to the Church." They had every right and duty to ask the questions and every right to expect an answer.  

They are not a council with any kind of competences. On the contrary, they as cardinals are bound in a higher degree to be loyal to the pope. He stands for the gift of unity, the charisma of Peter. That is where the cardinals have to support him, and not hinder him. By what authority do the authors of the letter act? On the fact that they are cardinals? That is not sufficient. Please. Of course they can write to the pope and send him their questions, but to oblige him to answer and to publish the case is another matter.

The first loyalty of the Cardinals and any Catholic is loyalty to Christ. We don't worship the Pope. What Pinto is suggesting is papolatry and a sin. 

The absolute majority of the first synod and a two-thirds majority in the second, in which the members of the bishops’ conferences were present, have exactly approved these theses that now the four cardinals contest.

The man is deluded or he is a liar. I suggest he is a liar and he needs to be called out for it. Synod votes must be two-thirds. Neither Synod voted to allow Holy Communion for those living in adultery. That is what Francis Bergoglio did, notwithstanding. The majority did not vote for this.

I am not the type who can threaten [people]. To write something like this is quite a journalistic license and is not serious. What I have said is, rather: Francis is a lighthouse of mercy and has infinite patience. For him, it is about agreeing, not about forcing. It was a serious act that these four have published their letter. But to think that he would remove their cardinalate – no. I do not believe that he will do that. […] In itself, as pope, he could do such a thing. The way I know Francis, he will not do it.

Well, the light's gone out in that "lighthouse of mercy." I don't believe Pinto. I have every belief that this was and continues to be discussed and as I opined earlier, this was a trial balloon. 

This is crazy. Such a council of cardinals does not exist that could hold the pope accountable. The task of the cardinals is to help the pope in the exercise of his office – and not to obstruct him or to give him precepts. And this is a fact: Francis is not only in full accordance with the teaching, but also with all of his predecessors in the 20th century, and that was a Golden Age with excellent popes – starting with Pius X.

Again, the man is in to deception. Francis has made an abrupt rupture with his predecessors. Not one of them would have promulgated Amoris Laetitia. The man is deluded and frankly, promoting evil. The first duty of the Cardinals is to Christ. If the Pope is acting contrary, then there are examples in history and in the writings of Saints and Doctors on what must be done. That process has begun. These men are monsters and now that they know that they have been found out, expect their anger to increase along with their evil.

I am shocked, especially about the gesture of Meisner. Meisner was a great bishop of an important diocese [Cologne] – how sad that he now with this action puts a shadow upon his history. Meisner, a great spiritual leader! That he would arrive at that, I did not expect. He was very close to John Paul II and Benedict, and he knows that Benedict XVI and Francis are in full agreement about the analysis and the conclusions when it comes to the question of marriage. And Burke – we have worked together. He seemed to me to be an amiable person. Now I would ask him: Your Eminence, why did you do that?

The man is a heresiarch, a common thug, a pathetic excuse for a priest. 

But we must thank him, he has exposed himself and those around Bergoglio for what they are.

When Kenny Farrell, a newly minted Prince of FrancisChurch receives a critical Tweet, he responds as any teenage girl would, he blocks. Feel free to Tweet this to him. Cardinal Farrell is engaging in deception. He is quite frankly either a liar or just plain stupid.

He perpetuates the lie that before Francis Bergoglio all was bad, No Pope was ever humble. No Pope was every loved by the people. 

They keep spinning and spinning that myth and now they have been found out by more than just us nutty bloggers and Trads.

When George Weigel publicly calls out these "witless worms," then you know it's getting bad.

Farrell is as unqualified to be a Cardinal as he was to be a bishop. Can there be any doubt that these poseurs and frauds have lost the faith, if they ever had it? They have no supernatural faith, they are modernists and haters of Christ.

There was an awful lot of this airbrushing before and during the recent consistory for the creation of new cardinals. And I regret to note that one striking example of it came in a Catholic News Service video-interview with Cardinal Kevin Farrell, recently transferred from Dallas to Rome to lead the new Vatican dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life. In that interview, the cardinal, who in 2014 was eager for me to give the University of Dallas commencement address in order commemorate the recently-canonized St. John Paul II, seemed to have forgotten that John Paul ever existed.

Thus Farrell, praising “Pope Francis’s great charisma” and “how the people flock to him” and the “amazing” way “he comes down to the people,” finished his tribute to the man who had named him cardinal by saying that all of this was “unthought-of and unheard of twenty years ago.”

Really?

Was John Paul II shot in his apartment by an interloper who had snuck past the Swiss Guard? Or was he shot by a would-be assassin standing in the midst of one of the vast throngs the Polish pope drew to St. Peter’s Square for over twenty-five years? Has Cardinal Farrell forgotten that, just before Mehmet Ali Agca’s shots rang out, John Paul had handed a small child he had embraced and blessed back to its mother? That was thirty-five years ago this past May 13. Which means that it’s preposterous to say that it was “unthought-of and unheard of twenty years ago” that a pope should mingle with crowds and embrace the people who were flocking to him. It was happening fifteen years and more before that.

Cardinal Zen: Pope Francis would ‘betray Christ’ by allowing Communist China to select bishops

HONG KONG, November 29, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) — The highest ranking Chinese Catholic has stated that if Pope Francis allows Communist China to have a hand in the selection of the nation's Catholic bishops it would be “betraying Jesus Christ.”

“You cannot go into negotiations with the mentality ‘we want to sign an agreement at any cost,’ then you are surrendering yourself, you are betraying yourself, you are betraying Jesus Christ,” Cardinal Joseph Zen told The Guardian this week.

The 84-year-old former bishop of Hong Kong has firmly opposed a potential deal between the Vatican and the Chinese government that would add legitimacy to the state-run Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association. He says the move would alienate authentic Catholics who worship in the ‘underground Church’ from the one true Church headed by Christ and his representative, the Pope.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month that in such a deal, "Rome would commit to recognize as bishops only those clerics who first win nomination from the Patriotic Association’s bishops conference,” thus allowing the government, not the Church, to decide who is bishop.

In the world of politics, this is not an uncommon thing, -- make a statement about something that is being considered in order to test the waters. Consider for example the kerfuffle over the potential of Donald J. Trump's appointment of Mitt Romney as American Secretary of State. I don't believe for one moment that he will do it, but he is sending out a message to test the reaction. Aside from what I really think is Trump's public eviscerating of Romney, as a vanquishment of the man who so attacked him without justification. The people have spoken and won't tolerate it.

Sadly the Vatican practices the same politics. The centre of the Church of Christ on Earth engages  such sleazy and vulgar practices. Nobody should be surprised that this "trial balloon" is being floated. I've expected it, in fact, I expect it to happen.

If Bergoglio dares to strip the four Cardinals of their red hats, then he will prove himself to be a vindictive and corrupt man, a narcissist and Peronist. A man who is driven by his own ambition and ego, thinking that every action taken by him and every thought that enters into his mind is divine inspiration. He will, if he does this, enshrine heresy. He will have proclaimed heresy because he will have silenced, or at least removed, all authorised opposition.

And a heretic cannot be Pope!

Vito Pinto Mons. "The four cardinals who have written to Pope could lose their cardinalate"

Mons. Pío Vito Pinto, Dean of the highest authority of the Catholic Church in the process of nullity, delivered a lecture at the University Ecclesiastical San Damaso de Madrid. Vigorously, he has said that the four cardinals who have asked the Pope Francisco to clarify some doubts about his apostolic exhortation Laetitia Amoris have committed a grave scandal by publishing this letter in the media.

The Cardinals have created a scandal? Not the Pope himself who has affirmed that those living in adultery can be openly admitted to Holy Communion in a state of mortal sin? Not the Bishops of Buenos Aires, or the Vicar of Rome? 

The Cardinals have every moral and legal right to ask the question and expect an answer. in fact, they have a duty before Christ. Their loyalty, your loyalty and mine is with Christ, not the Pope insofar as he separates himself from Christ's truth. The Pope is not a god. Papolatry is a sin and a scandal and Dean Pinto has committed it. He has committed a scandal by being the mouthpiece of Bergoglio and issuing threats to these four Cardinals, and any others who stand up for the truth of Catholic doctrine and faith.

In statements to Religion Confidential, Pio Vito has shown that these four cardinals, like some others in the Church who doubt the reform of Pope Francis and his apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia, are questioning " two synods of bishops on marriage and family do not a synod but two! An ordinary and another extraordinary. You cannot doubt the action of the Holy Spirit."

This man is deluded. The Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity cannot lie, he cannot change. To suggest that God the Holy Spirit is directing Bergoglio and his minions to destroy Catholic doctrine, sanction mortal sin and permit sacrilege is blasphemy.

The two Synods did not vote to allow Holy Communion for those in adultery. This is a lie. To do that, a Synod would require a two-thirds vote, this did not happen. Nor could it happen. A Synod cannot overturn doctrine. The Pope can ignore a Synod's advice. In this case, he did. He acted in spite of it. The Synod was manipulated, the evidence was there, out in the open attested to be no less than Cardinal Pell. The Pope has no authority to change doctrine, he has no authority to authorise that two-thousand years of Catholic practice can be overturned by one man.

Cardinals Walter Brandmüller, Raymond Burke, Carlo Caffarra and Joachim Meisner asked the Holy Father some doubts about the Amoris Laetitia.  Pope  Francis did not answer and prelates made the letter public through the media. "What Church defends these cardinals? The Pope is faithful to the doctrine of Christ. What they have done is a very serious scandal that could even lead to the Holy Father to withdraw the cardinal's hat as has happened at some other time of the Church," said Pio Vito to this Confidential. The dean of the Roman Rota clarifies: "Which is not to say that the Pope withdraw their status as cardinals, but could do."

Roberto de Mattei on Rorate Caeli blog wrote on the matter of the removal of Cardinals back in 2014, it was after Cardinal Burke was removed from the Apostolic Signatura.

The Pope inasmuch as he is supreme pastor of the universal Church, has full right to remove a bishop or cardinal from his office, even a distinguished one. A well-known case was the one of Cardinal Louis Billot (1846-1931). He was one of the greatest theologians of the 20th Century, who replaced his cardinal’s hat into the hands of Pius XI, with whom he had had differences regarding Action Francaise, and ended his days, as a simple Jesuit, at the house of his order in Galloro. Another striking case is Cardinal Josef Mindszenty, who was removed by Paul VI from his office as Archbishop of Esztergom and Primate of Hungary, as a result of his opposition to the Vatican ostpolitik.

The case of Cardinal Mindszenty was particularly egregious and a disgrace of Paul VI's papacy. Mindszenty was persecuted by the communists. The Vatican's policy of ostpolitik

was a scandal and a betrayal of Catholics now being waged again in China against the underground, faithful Church.   

This is also a warning to any other Cardinals and Bishops, particularly those in dioceses, to stand down and keep their mouths shut. As we look around we will see silence from them, until such time perhaps as enough of a force mounts against this error. The reality is in many dioceses, the Ordinary is well aware that this Pope is a vindictive man and will remove them leaving their flock to be devoured by someone of Bergoglio's own choosing. Think Chicago here. I fully expect that the next Cardinal on his way out is Marc Ouellet.

During the conference, Pius Vito made it clear to the audience that the Pope has not responded directly to them four cardinals, 'but has indirectly told that they see only white or black , when in the Church there are shades of colors." Few Catholics calling for the annulment Confidential religion also asked Mons. Pius Vito if not better open hand to divorced and remarried and grant marriage annulment, before a civil marriage so they can marry in the Church and receive the Eucharist. "The reform of the marriage process of Pope Francis wants to reach more people. The percentage of people seeking marriage annulment is very small. The Pope said that communion is not only good Catholics. Francisco says: how to reach the most excluded people? Many people, with the reform of Pope may request the annulment, but not others, "said the Dean of the Roman Rota.

The Cardinal is correct, the actual number of Catholics seeking a Decree of Nullity is very small relative to the number who simply divorce and remarry, civilly. Pope Bergoglio has made the outrageous statement that most Catholic marriages are invalid. If that is the case, then what does it matter, he is right, the presumption that the Sacramental Theology that the Sacraments, including Matrimony, are always valid unless proven otherwise be damned. The Pope had no business making this statement, but the very fact that he did and believes it, leads one to understand his motivation. The reality is that the very few Catholics who divorce and remarry civilly and want to come back to the Sacraments with a true heart and contrition, do; through the usual way - if not possible to return to the real spouse, then repentance, and living a life of continence. I know people who have done this. The actual number of those who wish to return without the normative way is even smaller than those who decide not to seek decrees of nullity in the first place.

In this matter, Pinto is deluded or intentionally misleading. Therefore, there must be another reason why Bergoglio and his minions have gone down this road. More than once in the last few weeks, Bergoglio has used the phrase, "motus in fine velocior," - the movement at the end goes faster. We know that the Bergoglio confidant and ghostwriter, Victor Emmanuel Fernadez has said about him:

"The pope must have his reasons, because he knows very well what he’s doing. He must have an objective that we don’t understand yet. You have to realize that he is aiming at a reform that is irreversible. If one day he should intuit that he’s running out of time and he doesn’t have enough time to do what the Spirit is asking him, you can be sure he will speed up."

What are we to conclude from this "speeding up?"

• Bergoglio knows his time is short due to health and will die soon.

• Bergoglio and his minions know that they must ram this heresy and sacrilege through before enough Catholics wake up and rise up against them.

• Bergoglio and his minions know that their generation is quickly dying and that those coming up in the next generation as priests will be formed by Summorum Pontificum and become valiant soldiers of Christ. This is why he is attacking "rigid" seminarians and will soon take moves against orthodox seminaries as he has done to prevent Ordinaries from establishing new Orders without his approval.

It really doesn't matter. The fact is, by their actions, these men, including the Bishop of Rome, have revealed to the faithful that they have no faith. They hate the faith, they hate the Catholic Church. They may not know it, but that is what is revealed by their actions. At best, they have drunk from the whore known as Modernism, "the synthesis of all heresies."

When we hear a Pope speak such words as motus in fine velocior, remember who else is angry because "his time is short."

The current pontificate has coincided with a worldwide decline in major seminary enrollments. After many years of small but steady annual increases in the number of major seminarians during the reigns of John Paul II and Benedict XVI, the numbers slightly dipped in 2012 then went down more steeply in 2013 and 2014. To be more precise: at the end of 2011 there were 120,616 major seminarians. This went down to 120,051 by end of 2012, 118,251 by end of 2013, and 116,319 by end of 2014 (the latest for which statistics are available). If the experience of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires is any indication, and if Francis manages to impose something of his vision on the actual process of priestly formation all over the world, we are convinced that we will see a collapse in vocations far greater than that which has already transpired in the first years of his pontificate.

Pope Bergoglio : It's okay to be "rigid" to save the planet, but not to save souls

With all the talk from the Bishop of Rome about the evils of rigidity, it comes as quite notable that he thinks differently when ti comes to "saving the planet." Pope Francis calls on scientists to create a "regulatory system," with "inviolable limits." We all need an "ecological conversion."

Heaven forbid we have a regulatory system with inviolable limits on sin and sacrilege.

Not a word about conversion to Our Lord Jesus Christ.

What irony and hypocrisy.

VATICAN CITY Humanity does not own God's gift of creation and has no right to pillage it, Pope Francis said.

"We are not custodians of a museum and its masterpieces that we have to dust off every morning, but rather collaborators in the conservation and development of the existence and biodiversity of the planet and human life," he said Nov. 28.

The pope addressed experts attending a plenary session of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences Nov. 25-29 to discuss the impact of scientific knowledge and technology on people and the planet.

People in the modern world have grown up "thinking we are the owners and masters of nature, authorized to plunder it without any consideration for its secret potential and evolutionary laws, as if it were an inert substance at our disposal, causing, among other things, a very serious loss of biodiversity," he said.

An "ecological conversion" is needed in which people recognize their responsibility for caring for creation and its resources, for trying to bring about social justice and for overcoming "an unfair system that produces misery, inequality and exclusion," the pope said. In fact, with sustainable development, the tasks of taking care of both people and the planet are inseparable, he said.

He lamented how easily well-founded scientific counsel is "disregarded" and how politics tends to obey technology and finance instead.

The proof of that, he said, is the way countries are still "distracted" or delayed in applying international agreements on the environment as well as the "continuous wars of dominance masquerading as noble declarations that cause increasingly serious harm to the environment and the moral and cultural wealth of peoples."

Pope Francis told the scientists that it was up to them to "build a cultural model to tackle the crisis of climate change and its social consequences so that enormous productive capacities are not reserved only to the few."

To do that, he said, the scientists would have to be free of political, economic and ideological interests, too.

Because scientists have been able to study and demonstrate many crises facing the planet, the pope called on them to be leaders in proposing solutions to the many problems, such as water, energy and food security.

He said it would be "indispensable" for the world's scientists to collaborate and create "a regulatory system that includes inviolable limits and guarantees the protection of ecosystems before new forms of power derived from the technological-economic paradigm produce irreversible damage not just to the environment but also to coexistence, democracy, justice and freedom."

Like the poor, climate change will always be with us

Fox and Vox have decided to pray the Divine Office this Advent according to the 1570 Tridentine office. This is before the reforms of Pius X and Pius XII/John XXIII and clearly far superior (and longer) than the Liturgy of the Hours with its missing psalms.

Imagine our surprise then, when reading Matins, we came across this, in Reading IX.

We know that there are three comings of the Lord. The third lies between the other two. It is invisible, while the other two are visible.

In the first coming he was seen on earth, dwelling among men; he himself testifies that they saw him and hated him. In the final coming all flesh will see the salvation of our God, and they will look on him whom they pierced. The intermediate coming is a hidden one; in it only the elect see the Lord within their own selves, and they are saved. In case someone should think that what we say about this middle coming is sheer invention, listen to what our Lord himself ways: If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him. There is another passage of Scripture which reads: He who fears God will do good, but something further has been said about the one who loves, that is, that he will keep God’s word. Where is God’s word to be kept? Obviously in the heart, as the prophet says: I have hidden your words in my heart, so that I may not sin against you.

Keep God’s word in this way. Let it enter into your very being, let it take possession of your desires and your whole way of life. Feed on goodness, and your soul will delight in its richness. Remember to eat your bread, or your heart will wither away. Fill your soul with richness and strength.

Because this coming lies between the other two, it is like a road on which we travel from the first coming to the last. In the first, Christ was our redemption; in the last, he will appear as our life; in this middle coming, he is our rest and consolation.

If you keep the word of God in this way, it will also keep you. The Son with the Father will come to you. The great Prophet who will build the new Jerusalem will come, the one who makes all things new. This coming will fulfill what is written: As we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, we shall also bear the likeness of the heavenly man. Just as Adam’s sin spread through all mankind and took hold of all, so Christ, who created and redeemed all, will glorify all, once he takes possession of all.

How does the Church correct the errors of a Pope?

Considering the seriousness of the questions put to him by the cardinals, Pope Francis’ decision not to respond is incomprehensible. The cardinals have cautioned the Holy Father that consequences will follow his refusal of their dubia. Cardinal Burke explained in his interview with Edward Pentin that the Pope's lack of response may trigger a formal act of correction. Pentin asked, “What happens if the Holy Father does not respond to your act of justice and charity and fails to give the clarification of the Church’s teaching that you hope to achieve?"  To which Cardinal Burke replied,

“Then we would have to address that situation. There is, in the Tradition of the Church, the practice of correction of the Roman Pontiff. It is something that is clearly quite rare. But if there is no response to these questions, then I would say that it would be a question of taking a formal act of correction of a serious error…”.

Pentin asked a follow up question, “If the Pope were to teach grave error or heresy, which lawful authority can declare this and what would be the consequences?” Cardinal Burke replied,

Pope Bergoglio corrected - Two forms of one Roman Rite does not equate with "exception!"

Pope's are not correct every time they spew happy water from their mouth or pass frankincense. They are not infallible on everything they say. This papolatry has done enormous damage to the Church,

Pope Bergoglio praises dissenting theologian who "challenged Catholic morality."

When he died in 1998, the anti-Catholic New York Times headlined that 85 year old Bernard Haring "challenged Catholic morality." He was a Redemptorist priest and was praised by the likes of Charles Curran and Richard McBrien, priests of post-Vatican II American Catholic destructionism.

In 2016, the Pope of Rome has praised the same man before his Jesuit brethren:

“I think Bernard Häring was the first to start looking for a new way to help moral theology to flourish again,”

In his continued theological disorientation, Jorge Bergoglio's theme "black and white" is again apparent in his address to the Jesuit General Congregation. 

In the same talk, Bergoglio condemned the new "morality" amongst seminarians. It is unclear from his incoherent, rambling exactly what "morality" he was questioning. The man is the most anti-theological, anti-intellectual, anti-philosophical Pope in history.

The Pope's words are in direct conflict of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Bergoglio is in grave error when he teaches that all must be "discerned," and that there is no "black and white." Our Lord made it quite clear that he came "not to destroy the Law but to fulfill it," and that if we "love him," we will keep his commandments. Thus, he expected us to see sin in "black and white," Bergoglio thinks differently.

Since I have the choice, I will follow the Lord Jesus.

Bishop Athanasius Schneider on the matter of the four Cardinals' Dubia to Pope Francis

A Prophetic Voice of Four Cardinals of the Holy Roman Catholic Church

Out of “deep pastoral concern,” four Cardinals of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, His Eminence Joachim Meisner, Archbishop emeritus of Cologne (Germany), His Eminence Carlo Caffarra, Archbishop emeritus of  Bologna (Italy), His Eminence Raymond Leo Burke, Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and His Eminence Walter Brandmüller, President emeritus of the Pontifical Commission of Historical Sciences, have published on November 14, 2016, the text of five questions, called dubia (Latin for “doubts”), which previously on September 19, 2016, they sent to the Holy Father and to Cardinal Gerhard Müller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, along with an accompanying letter. The Cardinals ask Pope Francis to clear up “grave disorientation and great confusion” concerning the interpretation and practical application, particularly of chapter VIII, of the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia and its passages relating to admission of remarried divorcees to the sacraments and the Church’s moral teaching.

In their statement entitled “Seeking Clarity: A Plea to Untie the Knots in Amoris Laetitia,” the Cardinals say that to “many — bishops, priests, faithful — these paragraphs allude to or even explicitly teach a change in the discipline of the Church with respect to the divorced who are living in a new union.” Speaking so, the Cardinals have merely stated real facts in the life of the Church. These facts are demonstrated by pastoral orientations on behalf of several dioceses and by public statements of some bishops and cardinals, who affirm that in some cases divorced and remarried Catholics can be admitted to Holy Communion even though they continue to use the rights reserved by Divine law to validly married spouses.

In publishing a plea for clarity in a matter that touches the truth and the sanctity simultaneously of the three sacraments of Marriage, Penance, and the Eucharist, the Four Cardinals only did their basic duty as bishops and cardinals, which consists in actively contributing so that the revelation transmitted through the Apostles might be guarded sacredly and might be faithfully interpreted. It was especially the Second Vatican Council that reminded all the members of the college of bishops as legitimate successors of the Apostles of their obligation, according to which “by Christ’s institution and command they have to be solicitous for the whole Church, and that this solicitude, though it is not exercised by an act of jurisdiction, contributes greatly to the advantage of the universal Church. For it is the duty of all bishops to promote and to safeguard the unity of faith and the discipline common to the whole Church” (Lumen gentium, 23; cf. also Christus Dominus, 5-6).

In making a public appeal to the Pope, bishops and cardinals should be moved by genuine collegial affection for the Successor of Peter and the Vicar of Christ on earth, following the teaching of Vatican Council II (cf. Lumen gentium, 22);, in so doing they render “service to the primatial ministry” of the Pope (cf. Directory for the Pastoral Ministry of Bishops, 13).

The entire Church in our days has to reflect upon the fact that the Holy Spirit has not in vain inspired Saint Paul to write in the Letter to the Galatians about the incident of his public correction of Peter. One has to trust that Pope Francis will accept this public appeal of the Four Cardinals in the spirit of the Apostle Peter, when St Paul offered him a fraternal correction for the good of the whole Church. May the words of that great Doctor of the Church, St Thomas Aquinas, illuminate and comfort us all: “When there is a danger for the faith, subjects are required to reprove their prelates, even publicly. Since Paul, who was subject to Peter, out of the danger of scandal, publicly reproved him. And Augustine comments: “Peter himself gave an example to superiors by not disdaining to be corrected by his subjects when it occurred to them that he had departed from the right path” (Summa theol., II-II, 33, 4c).

Pope Francis often calls for an outspoken and fearless dialogue between all members of the Church in matters concerning the spiritual good of souls. In the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris laetitia, the Pope speaks of a need for “open discussion of a number of doctrinal, moral, spiritual, and pastoral questions. The thinking of pastors and theologians, if faithful to the Church, honest, realistic and creative, will help us to achieve greater clarity” (n. 2). Furthermore, relationships at all levels within the Church must be free from a climate of fear and intimidation, as Pope Francis has requested in his various pronouncements.

In light of these pronouncements of Pope Francis and the principle of dialogue and acceptance of legitimate plurality of opinions, which was fostered by the documents of the Second Vatican Council, the unusually violent and intolerant reactions on behalf of some bishops and cardinals against the calm and circumspect plea of the Four Cardinals cause great astonishment. Among such intolerant reactions one could read affirmations such as, for instance: the four Cardinals are witless, naive, schismatic, heretical, and even comparable to the Arian heretics.

Such apodictic merciless judgments reveal not only intolerance, refusal of dialogue, and irrational rage, but demonstrate also a surrender to the impossibility of speaking the truth, a surrender to relativism in doctrine and practice, in faith and life. The above-mentioned clerical reaction against the prophetic voice of the Four Cardinals parades ultimately powerlessness before the eyes of the truth. Such a violent reaction has only one aim: to silence the voice of the truth, which is disturbing and annoying the apparently peaceful nebulous ambiguity of these clerical critics.

The negative reactions to the public statement of the Four Cardinals resemble the general doctrinal confusion of the Arian crisis in the fourth century. It is helpful to all to quote in the situation of the doctrinal confusion in our days some affirmations of Saint Hilary of Poitiers, the “Athanasius of the West”.

“You [the bishops of Gaul] who still remain with me faithful in Christ did not give way when threatened with the onset of heresy, and now by meeting that onset you have broken all its violence. Yes, brethren, you have conquered, to the abundant joy of those who share your faith: and your unimpaired constancy gained the double glory of keeping a pure conscience and giving an authoritative example” (Hil. De Syn., 3).

“Your [the bishops of Gaul] invincible faith keeps the honourable distinction of conscious worth and, content with repudiating crafty, vague, or hesitating action, safely abides in Christ, preserving the profession of its liberty. For since we all suffered deep and grievous pain at the actions of the wicked against God, within our boundaries alone is communion in Christ to be found from the time that the Church began to be harried by disturbances such as the expatriation of bishops, the deposition of priests, the intimidation of the people, the threatening of the faith, and the determination of the meaning of Christ’s doctrine by human will and power. Your resolute faith does not pretend to be ignorant of these facts or profess that it can tolerate them, perceiving that by the act of hypocritical assent it would bring itself before the bar of conscience” (Hil. De Syn., 4).

“I have spoken what I myself believed, conscious that I owed it as my soldier’s service to the Church to send to you in accordance with the teaching of the Gospel by these letters the voice of the office which I hold in Christ. It is yours to discuss, to provide and to act, that the inviolable fidelity in which you stand you may still keep with conscientious hearts, and that you may continue to hold what you hold now” (Hil. De Syn., 92).

The following words of Saint Basil the Great, addressed to the Latin Bishops, can be in some aspects applied to the situation of those who in our days ask for doctrinal clarity, including our Four Cardinals: “The one charge which is now sure to secure severe punishment is the careful keeping of the traditions of the Fathers. We are not being attacked for the sake of riches, or glory, or any temporal advantages. We stand in the arena to fight for our common heritage, for the treasure of the sound faith, derived from our Fathers. Grieve with us, all you who love the brethren, at the shutting of the mouths of our men of true religion, and at the opening of the bold and blasphemous lips of all that utter unrighteousness against God. The pillars and foundation of the truth are scattered abroad. We, whose insignificance has allowed of our being overlooked, are deprived of our right of free speech” (Ep. 243, 2.4).

Today those bishops and cardinals, who ask for clarity and who try to fulfill their duty in guarding sacredly and faithfully interpreting the transmitted Divine Revelation concerning the Sacraments of Marriage and the Eucharist, are no longer exiled as it was with the Nicene bishops during the Arian crisis. Contrary to the time of the Arian crisis, today, as wrote Rudolf Graber, the bishop of Ratisbone, in 1973, exile of the bishops is replaced by hush-up strategies and by slander campaigns (cf. Athanasius und die Kirche unserer Zeit, Abensberg 1973, p. 23).

Another champion of the Catholic faith during the Arian crisis was Saint Gregory Nazianzen. He wrote the following striking characterization of the behavior of the majority of the shepherds of the Church in those times. This voice of the great Doctor of the Church should be a salutary warning for the bishops of all times: “Surely the pastors have done foolishly; for, excepting a very few, who either on account of their insignificance were passed over, or who by reason of their virtue resisted, and who were to be left as a seed and root for the springing up again and revival of Israel by the influences of the Spirit, all temporized, only differing from each other in this, that some succumbed earlier, and others later; some were foremost champions and leaders in the impiety, and others joined the second rank of the battle, being overcome by fear, or by interest, or by flattery, or, what was the most excusable, by their own ignorance” (Orat. 21, 24).

When Pope Liberius in 357 signed one of the so called formulas of Sirmium, in which he deliberately discarded the dogmatically defined expression “homo-ousios” and excommunicated Saint Athanasius in order to have peace and harmony with the Arian and Semi-Arian bishops of the East, faithful Catholics and some few bishops, especially Saint Hilary of Poitiers, were deeply shocked. Saint Hilary transmitted the letter that Pope Liberius wrote to the Oriental bishops, announcing the acceptance of the formula of Sirmium and the excommunication of Saint Athanasius. In his deep pain and dismay, Saint Hilary added to the letter in a kind of desperation the phrase: “Anathema tibi a me dictum, praevaricator Liberi” (I say to you anathema, prevaricator Liberius), cf. Denzinger-Schönmetzer, n. 141. Pope Liberius wanted to have peace and harmony at any price, even at the expense of the Divine truth. In his letter to the heterodox Latin bishops Ursace, Valence, and Germinius announcing to them the above-mentioned decisions, he wrote that he preferred peace and harmony to martyrdom (cf. cf. Denzinger-Schönmetzer, n. 142).

“In what a dramatic contrast stood the behavior of Pope Liberius to the following conviction of Saint Hilary of Poitiers: “We don’t make peace at the expense of the truth by making concessions in order to acquire the reputation of tolerance. We make peace by fighting legitimately according to the rules of the Holy Spirit. There is a danger to ally surreptitiously with unbelief under the beautiful name of peace.” (Hil. Ad Const., 2, 6, 2).

Blessed John Henry Newman commented on these unusual sad facts with the following wise and equilibrated affirmation: “While it is historically true, it is in no sense doctrinally false, that a Pope, as a private doctor, and much more Bishops, when not teaching formally, may err, as we find they did err in the fourth century. Pope Liberius might sign a Eusebian formula at Sirmium, and the mass of Bishops at Ariminum or elsewhere, and yet they might, in spite of this error, be infallible in their ex cathedra decisions” (The Arians of the Fourth Century, London, 1876, p. 465).

The Four Cardinals with their prophetic voice demanding doctrinal and pastoral clarity have a great merit before their own conscience, before history, and before the innumerable simple faithful Catholics of our days, who are driven to the ecclesiastical periphery, because of their fidelity to Christ’s teaching about the indissolubility of marriage. But above all, the Four Cardinals have a great merit in the eyes of Christ. Because of their courageous voice, their names will shine brightly at the Last Judgment. For they obeyed the voice of their conscience remembering the words of Saint Paul: “We cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth” (2 Cor 13: 8). Surely, at the Last Judgment the above-mentioned mostly clerical critics of the Four Cardinals will not have an easy answer for their violent attack on such a just, worthy, and meritorious act of these Four Members of the Sacred College of Cardinals.

The following words inspired by the Holy Spirit retain their prophetic value especially in view of the spreading doctrinal and practical confusion regarding the Sacrament of Marriage in our days: “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” (2 Tim. 4: 3-5).

May all, who in our days still take seriously their baptismal vows and their priestly and episcopal promises, receive the strength and the grace of God so that they may reiterate together with Saint Hilary the words: “May I always be in exile, if only the truth begins to be preached again!” (De Syn., 78). This strength and grace we wish wholeheartedly to our Four Cardinals and as well as to those who criticize them.
