The poor Holy Father. He has been surrounded by imbeciles who would have the stupidity to allow two environmental activists in such proximity to him after his breakfast that they would use the Vicar of Christ to promulgate an attack on a legitimate industry and science that neither the Pope nor the cabal around him have any competence in.
Any more than he could solemnly proclaim that the moon is made of cream cheese and that the belief is binding on all Catholics.
Holy Father, please free yourself from these incompetent sycophants that serve neither you or the Church but a corrupt agenda.

The pope holds a master's degree in chemistry from the University of Buenos Aires. He can formulate an opinion on fracking from an educated and competent perspective.
Moreover, this pope doesn't appear to managed by anybody. He orchestrates his message using those around him. If there's an agenda, Francis is its source.
I doubt that a Masters in Chemistry from over 55 years ago gives him any more qualification than me, okay, maybe slightly. Did he study Fracking then? Did anyone even know of it. You said he was degreed in chemistry, did you mean geology? Then I might give him so credibility.
So, if he is not "managed" should somebody not say "not a good idea?" If he did this on his own it is even worse.
He should not give such an opinion on such an issue or pose with people who do have a political and economic agenda.
Fracking was invented in 1947, and it has a stellar safety record since then. What's newer is its combination with horizontal drilling, which just reduces the footprint above ground and makes it much more productive and efficient.
Francis is an intellectual lightweight compared to his two predecessors.
