His DisGrace, Raymond Lahey

d
Dear Your Disgrace,

Please do us all a favour and, if you are guilty, plead guilty and go away to a monastery and live a life of prayer and penance for the damage that you have done to the children and the church. No plea bargain, no excuses, pay your debt to Ceasar and be done with it. Apologise to the LORD and to the Catholics of Canada and we'll look after you in your retirement. But don't scandalise the Church anymore.

And don't even get me started on your destruction of liturgy in Canada and CBW III under your responsibility.

Shame on you Raymond Lahey for all the above.

Sincerely,

Vox Cantoris

Bishop Child Pornography Case Delayed

Daniel Proussalidis

December 16, 2009

There's a new date for the resumption of the case of a Roman Catholic bishop facing child pornography charges.

A lawyer for Raymond Lahey has requested more time to prepare his case.

So the next court appearances has been pushed to January 13th.

The 69-year-old Lahey was charged in September with possessing and importing child pornography. He's been out on bail and living in Ottawa since October 1st.

I'm not too concerned with this delay, it's quite normal for judicial proceedings. As for pleading guilty and all that, let's remember that he is entitled to a defense and the presumption of innocence in court. I wouldn't blame him for trying to cop a plea for the best deal he can get. The prospect of few years in prison for a seventy year old are not very enticing.

I'm more concerned about who's going to pay his legal bills. He should pay out of his own resources or go on legal aid. I'd hate to see the lay faithful of his former diocese stuck with the bill.

The fact that he's being sheltered by Bishop Prendergast temporarily is reasonable. But, assuming he's found guilty, why should we look after him in his retirement?

John, I recall an announcement that the Archdiocese will not pay for his legal bills.

He must have quite a lot of cash, given the well Ottawa law firm that is representing him.

Thanks for clearing that up. I hope his legal bill is not paid for out of any church funds.

What are you talking about when you blame him for the state of the liturgy and CBW III?

Raymond Lahey was in charge of the CBW III, and he is personally responsible for many destructive word changes in timeless hymns. If you look on the introductory page you will see his letter. Further, he was responsible on the liturgy committee for much of the "inclusive" language in the Canadian Sacramentary and the pushing of the envelope in the Ordo.

Fortunately, Rome will correct this in the new Roman Missal and CBW IV is under way.

Yes, Raymond Lahey was destructive in many areas.
