Wuerl says only ‘very few’ are unhappy with Pope Francis https://cruxnow.com/uncategorized/2016/07/10/wuerl-interview/

From Crux: "Despite an undercurrent of criticism of Pope Francis in some sectors of social media, the blogosphere, cable TV talk shows, and so on, Washington’s Cardinal Donald Wuerl says he’s experienced tremendous enthusiasm for the pontiff, and that those “threatened” and “unhappy” are “very few.”

I agree with Cardinal Wuerl. His Holiness Pope Francis is very popular with the Faithful. Catholics love their Popes. The majority of Catholics reject His Holiness Pope Francis enjoys tremendous popularity throughout the Church. Despite the controversies and confusion that swirled about his Pontificate, Pope Benedict XVI was very popular with his flock. Popes Saint John Paul II, John Paul I, Blessed Paul VI, Saint John XXIII, and Venerable Pius XII were very popular with the Faithful.

Again, Popes enjoy great popularity within the Church. That is why Traditionalists waste their time, energy, and money forming conferences to denounce Amoris Laetitia..."demand" that Pope Francis repent of his "errors" (supposed heresies)...

"Nobody" amongst the Faithful supports such endeavors. I doubt that 99 percent of Catholics are even aware of such events as the waste-of-time VeriCatholic conference that denounced AL...Rorate Caeli's endless bashing of Pope Francis...The Remnant's endless bashing of Pope Francis... Even if there were aware of such things, the majority of Catholics would reject said attacks against Pope Francis.

Catholics who oppose Pope Francis would do well to pray for Pope Francis and present, in respectful fashion, their concerns, which is their right, about him.

That is the Catholic way to proceed in regard to concerns about Pope Francis and Church matters. Otherwise, Papal critics simply hit their heads against walls when they attack Pope Francis as the majority of Catholics are on Pope Francis' side.

He is a very popular, beloved Pope.

The Communication from the Holy See's Press Office claimed that Cardinal Sarah's remarks about ad orientem worship were "misinterpreted as if to announce new instructions different from those in effect in current liturgical norms and the words of the Pope regarding the celebration of the Mass facing the people and on the ordinary form of the Mass."

"There are not, therefore, any new liturgical directives beginning next Advent as some have wrongly inferred from the words of Cardinal Sarah...".

Who "misinterpreted" Cardinal Sarah's remarks in question? Who inferred that "new liturgical directives" were on the way from Rome?

Below are Cardinal Sarah's comments about ad orientem. He doesn't even hint at the things claimed by Father Lombardi via the Holy See Press Office's press release.

"I WANT TO MAKE an appeal to all priests. You may have read my article in L’Osservatore Romano one year ago (12 June 2015) or my interview with the journal Famille Chrétienne in May of this year.

"On both occasions I said that I believe that it is very important that we return as soon as possible to a common orientation, of priests and the faithful turned together in the same direction—Eastwards or at least towards the apse—to the Lord who comes, in those parts of the liturgical rites when we are addressing God.

"This practice is permitted by current liturgical legislation. It is perfectly legitimate in the modern rite. Indeed, I think it is a very important step in ensuring that in our celebrations the Lord is truly at the center.

"I WOULD LIKE TO APPEAL ALSO to my brother bishops: please lead your priests and people towards the Lord in this way, particularly at large celebrations in your dioceses and in your cathedral.

"Please form your seminarians in the reality that we are not called to the priesthood to be at the centre of liturgical worship ourselves, but to lead Christ’s faithful to him as fellow worshippers. Please facilitate this simple but profound reform in your dioceses, your cathedrals, your parishes and your seminaries."

Based upon posts and comments to the most important, influential blogs, such as Vox's, within the Traditional Catholic blogosphere, Robert Cardinal Sarah has emerged as the leading "Traditional" prelate among the majority of Traditional Catholics.

Of course, "hardcore" Traditionalists, such as sedevacantists, insist that Cardinal Sarah is an "heretical", New Church" laymen disguised as a Cardinal. However, I believe that Cardinal Sarah has emerged as the current favorite Churchman among Traditionalists.

Cardinal Burke had almost certainly filled that role until he was attacked by Traditionalists following his refusal to denounce Amoris Laetitia as "heretical". A great many Traditionalists, such as those attached to The Remnant, denounced Cardinal Burke as a man who plays the laity "for fools".

Anyway, I am surprised that Cardinal Sarah has emerged as a favorite among Traditionalists as he has made it clear that he's very much a man of Vatican II. He has made it clear that he believes that Vatican II offered a legitimate reform of the Roman Mass.

Cardinal Sarah, of course, believes that the post-Vatican II liturgical reform veered off the rails. However, he believes that Vatican II's "authentic" reforms must be implemented.

Conversely, it is routine to encounter the complete trashing of Vatican II among Traditionalists. Traditionalists trash, in particular, Sacrosanctum Concilum — Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. Cardinal Sarah supports Sacrosanctum Concilum.

Cardinal Sarah has also praised Amoris Laetitia to the hilt. He has proclaimed Pope Francis as a staunch defender of Traditional Church Teaching on the family and marriage.

In May 2016 A.D., at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, Cardinal Sarah declared the following:

"In his post-synodal Exhortation on the Family, Amoris Lætitia (“The Joy of Love”), Pope Francis states clearly: “In no way must the Church desist from proposing the full ideal of marriage, God’s plan in all its grandeur … proposing less than what Jesus offers to the human being.”

"This is why the Holy Father openly and vigorously defends Church teaching on contraception, abortion, homosexuality, reproductive technologies, the education of children and much more."
=============================================================================

Based upon their having turned viciously against Cardinal Burke, I imagine that the current praise that Cardinal Sarah has received from a great many, if not majority of Traditionalists, will end. I believe that the praise will end as I don't believe that Cardinal Sarah will confront in any sense, let alone denounce publicly His Holiness Pope Francis.

Traditionalists grow more and more desperate each day for Cardinals, even a Cardinal, to take a hardcore public stand against Pope Francis...they want him denounced as a "heretic".

I don't envision that from Cardinal Sarah. Therefore, I believe that the current popularity that Cardinal Sarah enjoys among a great many Traditionalists will fade.
That will occur undoubtedly should Cardinal Sarah implement the following:

Cardinal Sarah revealed that he has been tasked by Pope Francis "to investigate the possibilities of mutual enrichment between the older and newer forms of the Roman rite, first spoken of by Pope Benedict XVI."

Should Cardinal Sarah implement that plan, that is, tinker with the TLM as Rome is determined to do, then Traditionalists would trash and bash Cardinal Sarah to the hilt.

Between the Holy See Press Release that stuck it to him, and his unhesitating loyalty to Vatican II and the liturgical reform, which includes the "enrichment" (reform) of the TLM, which enrages Traditionalists, I don't believe that Cardinal Sarah is in a favorable situation.

Mark,

This blogger did not condemn or abandon Raymond Cardinal Burke for a variety of reasons.

Cardinal Burke is a profoundly holy and humble man. I know people that know him personally. He came to my aid with an incredible public statement during the actions of Thomas Rosica against me and my family.

I believe, that being one of the world's eminent Canonists, Cardinal Burke knows more than me about what he can and cannot do. I also believe he knows exactly what he is doing.

Mark Thomas said...

Vox, I know that you haven't abandoned Cardinal Burke. You never attacked Cardinal Burke. As you noted, Cardinal Burke defended you and your family when attacked by Father Rosica.

Vox, you are a loyal man.

Vox, you stood by Michael Voris when he was attacked in various ways following his revelation about his homosexual past. You remained loyal to him as he had aided you when Father Rosica had attacked you and your family.

At his hour of death, you stood spiritually by Rob Ford and his family when just about everybody else had abandoned them.

Vox, I admire you greatly.

I believe that, unfortunately, should he implement the plan to "enrich" the TLM, then more than a few Traditionalists will turn on him. The same folks who supported, then turned on Cardinal Burke viciously, will do the same to Cardinal Sarah.

The Traditionalists in question don't possess your sense of loyalty.

Pax.
