SSPX issues communique - "The proclamation of Catholic doctrine requires the denunciation of errors that have made their way into it and are unfortunately encouraged including (by) the Pope himself."

The Society of St. Pius X has issued a communique today following its meeting of major superiors.

The Pope is in error on much, he has sown seeds of discord and promulgated confusion, insults and he has even written and spoken heretical statements and praised the enemies of Catholicism. He has prayed with the enemies of Christ, the Mohammedans (as have his two predecessors) and he has asked schismatic and heretical sect leaders who have lead millions of Catholics away from the true Faith, to "bless" him.

On a weekly basis, Jorge Bergoglio gives scandal to the true Faith and to faithful Catholics everywhere.

The time is coming when great churchmen will need to confront him and denounce his actions and this papacy.

He, who is pictured below, will be amongst them.

mgr fellay communique

At the conclusion of the meeting of the major superiors of the Society of Saint Pius X that was held in Switzerland, from June 25 to 28, 2016, the Superior General addressed the following communiqué:

The purpose of the Society of Saint Pius X is chiefly the formation of priests, the essential condition for the renewal of the Church and for the restoration of society.

  1. In the great and painful confusion that currently reigns in the Church, the proclamation of Catholic doctrine requires the denunciation of errors that have made their way into it and are unfortunately encouraged by a large number of pastors, including the Pope himself.
  2. The Society of Saint Pius X, in the present state of grave necessity which gives it the right and duty to administer spiritual aid to the souls that turn to it, does not seek primarily a canonical recognition, to which it has a right as a Catholic work. It has only one desire: faithfully to bring the light of the bi-millennial Tradition which shows the only route to follow in this age of darkness in which the cult of man replaces the worship of God, in society as in the Church.
  3. The “restoration of all things in Christ” intended by Saint Pius X, following Saint Paul (cf. Ep.h 1:10), cannot happen without the support of a Pope who concretely favors the return to Sacred Tradition. While waiting for that blessed day, the Society of Saint Pius X intends to redouble its efforts to establish and to spread, with the means that Divine Providence gives to it, the social reign of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
  4. The Society of Saint Pius X prays and does penance for the Pope, that he might have the strength to proclaim Catholic faith and morals in their entirety. In this way he will hasten the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary that we earnestly desire as we approach the centennial of the apparitions in Fatima.

Thank You, dear Lord, for Bishop Fellay and the good shepherds who endeavor to imitate You, the Good Shepherd.

Strengthen them in the Holy Catholic Faith. Give them charity, prudence, fortitude and all the Gifts and Virtues of the Holy Ghost.

Make them, O Lord, who have been declared stewards of episcopal grace, followers of You, the true Shepherd, who gave His life for His sheep. Make of them leaders to the blind, lights to those in darkness, instructors to the ignorant, teachers to the young, lights to the world; that having directed the souls entrusted to them in this life, they may stand unashamed before Your Judgement seat and receive the great reward which You have prepared for those who contend valiantly in the preaching of Your Gospel.

Truly maddening to be Catholic these days. Remaining faithful through constant sex scandals, money scandals, and now to have a pope who calls people like me rigid and who has mocked the rosary. The pope and the shepherds are trying to drive the faithful sheep out.

To hell with them.

The funny thing is that while Bishop Fellay claims that His Holiness Pope Francis promotes errors, Pope Francis is, by far, Bishop Fellay's (as well as the SSPX's) greatest friend. Conversely, within the SSPX are priests (as well as laymen attached to SSPX chapels) who insist that Bishop Fellay promotes grave errors.

Beyond that, there isn't any shortage of SSPX Resistance members, not to mention well as sedevacantists, who insist that Bishop Fellay and the SSPX are guilty of heresy.

Note to Bishop Fellay: You have your share of fierce critics within and without the SSPX. Your critics have accused you of having promoted grave errors...even heresies. Your critics insist that you are a modernist. They insist that you and Pope Francis occupy the same boat when it comes to the promotion of errors.

What Bishop Fellay has dished out in regard to his claim about Pope Francis, he (Bishop Fellay) has received in return.

It is the timely statement from SSPX HQ . Those who had unnecessary doubts and made wrong accusations against the society of SSPX must realise now that they were in haste and mislead many good faithful. Resistance group must be humble enough to accept their leaving the society on wrong convictions .If they repent and take a courageous step forward to get united with the society , the group will set a good example to the Traditional Catholics .
Through prayer and Penance everything is possible. They may count on the help and mercy of our Blessed Mother Mary. They may spend rest of their life remaining faithful to the Society and carry on their missionary work . Let the Will of God be done.

oh well it sounds like there won't be any unilateral recognition or re-establishment of 'full communion'.

Well, I was all filled with optimism and hope after reading the article. The SSPX has always been a beacon of hope for me, that orthodoxy and true Christian charity exists as a seed, growing in desolate ground, through which God will save His Beloved.

Then I read Mark's comment, and got a major downer. Really? Even Bp Fellay? Division and heresy and grave errors within the SSPX? The circle is getting small indeed. Maybe just one or two faithful ones left in all the world perhaps?

Good grief! I hope he is wrong. I would very much like to hold on to some hope that the SSPX, at least, is a unity of iron-spined men with a unity of purpose, remaining true to their founder and to their Patron Saint. It sure seems so, from this article. I am waiting, eagerly, for Shepherds to shepherd; to whack a few wolves with their shepherd's crooks.

Vox-permitting, to follow up please on my previous comments here...

Catholics who believe that Bishop Fellay and the SSPX espouse certain errors are not, of course, limited to Catholics attached to SSPX chapels, SSPX Resistance folks, and sedevacantists. Millions of lay Catholics throughout the world insist that Bishop Fellay and the SSPX espouse errors.

Most certainly, thousands of bishops insist that Bishop Fellay and the SSPX are not free from error. Example: Bishop Athanasius Schneider declared the following to Church Militant:

-- "I never said that I support the positions of the SSPX about Vatican II."

-- "I have not said that the current canonical situation of the SSPX is OK. The contrary, because of...their uncanonical status it is necessary that they receive the recognition from the Holy See."

Bishop Schneider declared that the SSPX is guilty of "incorrect and exaggerated expressions and judgments".

Bishop Schneider to Church Militant: "Of course, the SPPX has to make their critics [criticisms] with more respect towards the supreme authority of the Church and has to avoid incorrect and exaggerated expressions and judgments."

The good news is that despite their errors, as well as their "incorrect and exaggerated expressions and judgments," the SSPX remains Catholic. Also, his fiercest critics aside, by all accounts, Bishop Fellay is a fine man.

As Pope Francis noted, Bishop Fellay is man with whom Rome can "dialogue". (That, of course, is among the reasons as to why Bishop Fellay's fiercest critics claim that he's a "heretic" (he isn't). )

But my point is simply that while Bishop Fellay may claim that Pope Francis espouses errors, he (Bishop Fellay) and the SSPX, in turn, espouse errors, according to countless Catholics.

For Bishop Fellay and the SSPX, what goes around, comes around.

Pax.

We need to pray for Bishop Fellay and the SSPX as they face infighting and dissensions that could deal a serious blow to the Society's overall health.

http://cor-mariae.com/index.php?threads/another-sspx-priest-leaves-open-letter-from-fr-pierre-roy.4010/

"Another SSPX priest leaves: Open Letter from Fr. Pierre Roy...June 3, 2016 A.D....Open Letter to the Faithful of Quebec and the Maritime Provinces."

Until recently, I had dismissed the following claim advanced by many Traditionalists: The SSPX would collapse should His Holiness Pope Francis and Bishop Fellay agree to a "deal" that would regularize the Society.

The notion, which I found bizarre, advanced by many Traditionalists is that upon their having received everything that the Society needs/desires — regularization, a structure that would allow the SSPX to operate without interference from liberal bishops, etc. — the SSPX would then descend into vicious in-fighting. In turn, the SSPX would collapse.

The belief is that what really holds the SSPX together is that everybody within the Society has a common "enemy" to resist. The SSPX has a common "enemy" against whom to rage. The common "enemy" is, of course, "modernist" Rome. Once that common "enemy" disappeared, as would be the case should Bishop Fellay sign a "deal" with Rome, then the infighting and dissension would peak to the point that the SSPX would collapse.

I realized, of course, that the SSPX had its share of difficulties. But I was confident (well, I wished to have believed) that the key troublemakers had vacated the Society. In turn, serious dissension within the SSPX had abated with the absence of the SSPX's key troublemakers.

Well, now, I am not as confident about that. A few weeks ago, Father Pierre Roy joined the ranks of priests (SSPX), not to mention lay Catholics attached to SSPX chapels, who have painted a very bleak picture of the SSPX.

In fact, Father Roy joined the ranks of priests who have fled the SSPX.

It is undeniable that the SSPX resistance movement is growing. It is undeniable that infighting and dissension have not disappeared with the SSPX.

Satan is determined to rip apart the SSPX. The same claims — "heresy," "modernism" — hurled against Pope Francis and Rome are hurled against Bishop Fellay and the SSPX. What is most troubling is that those claims are hurled by people within the SSPX who attack daily the SSPX leadership. Therefore, we need to entreat God to protect the SSPX from collapse.

What seemed preposterous until recently, — the claim by many Traditionalists that the SSPX is primed to collapse — may be worthy of consideration, if such claims as the following are credible:

Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre
"...if sometimes, you are overcome by feelings of discouragement, by feelings of being rent inside – nearly of despair at the sight of the Church torn and suffering, struck from all sides; if these feelings invade your soul, know that Our Lord is with you, provided that you keep the words that Our Lord gave us, that Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us.

And it is by these sacrifices that one day the enemy will be driven away from the Church and that the Church will again discover her splendor. It will no longer be undermined by persons who desire its disappearance, or who desire its destruction.

And so today we must all pray together. We must pray, in particular, that God will drive away the enemies from the Church in order that the church may again give the graces which the faithful need and which the world needs for its salvation."

The SSPX communiqué in question is in need of clarification from the SSPX. One Traditionalist blogger and its commenters after another declared today that "negotiations" between Rome and the SSPX are finished as the SSPX has "thrown down the gauntlet and backed Pope Francis into a corner".

Well...I encountered a couple of commenters who dissented from that interpretation. However, the overwhelming amount of commenters agreed that the SSPX "stuck" it to Pope Francis via the communiqué

Conversely, Rorate Caeli declared that Bishop Fellay and the SSPX have not done any such thing.

Rorate Caeli's interpretation of the communiqué differs radically from, in effect, every other Traditionalist interpretation of the communiqué.

It probably won't take long to determine whether Rorate Caeli is correct.

Mr. Thomas, have you read the reasons given by Fr. Pierre Roy for his leaving the SSPX? It is a most astute, moving, and mature explanation.

Archbishop Lefebvre maintained that Rome would need to return to the Faith before the SSPX could reconcile. One needn't have a rancorous intention in order to support the Resistance. One does need to understand the position of Archbishop Lefebvre, however. Though I understand that you may disagree, which is fine.
As Bishop Williamson often says, not everything is black-and-white. The Crisis causes confusion, which isn't the fault of the Faithful and traditional priests who are doing the best they can.

@ Paul Morphy : this is very encouraging news on the part of the SSPX. The language as ever is clear and lucid and easy to understand. This pope is in grave error and the SSPX are calling him on his errors. We should take heart.

In respect of Mark Thomas and his post about conservative catholic bloggers dissenting from the view expressed by SSPX today - well, Mark, bloggers can comment in whatever way they choose. Their comments don't take away one iota from the public statement issued by SSPX following their conference.

Mark Thomas said...

Vox-permitting, to add to my previous comment in regard to the SSPX communiqué...

On such blogs as The Remnant, comment boxes are filled with claims that via the communiqué, Bishop Fellay has issued an "ultimatum" to Rome...has thrown down the gauntlet...ended talks with Rome...

However, on several SSPX-related discussion forums, hours prior to Rorate Caeli's positive interpretation of the SSPX communiqué, commenters insisted that the communiqué was not even close to an "ultimatum".

In fact, speculation is that Bishop Fellay has provided cover for himself as it's believed that Pope Francis is about to regularize the SSPX. That is, to prevent defections from the SSPX upon its regularization, Bishop Fellay can say..."read the communiqué...I've made it clear to Rome that the SSPX is uncompromising in regard to Holy Tradition. I have sold-out to 'modernist' Rome. However, as Pope Francis has granted us canonical recognition, what else can I do other than to except his 'offer'?".

Therefore, along with Rorate Caeli, numerous SSPX-related internet sites have rejected the claim that the communiqué has ended SSPX cooperation with Rome.

That makes sense as the SSPX is Catholic and has maintained always that they are in communion with the Vicar of Christ. Therefore, why, via a communiqué or otherwise, would the SSPX declare that they have issued an "ultimatum" (halted talks) to the Apostolic See?

"Throwing down the gauntlet" to the Apostolic See isn't the Catholic way. Besides, the SSPX's official position is that they desire regularization from Rome.

The claim today by numerous Traditionalists, that the SSPX has "stuck" it to Rome via the communiqué, doesn't seem valid to me.

But time will tell...

Marsaili, I have read Father Roy's letter four times. If you wish to believe that Father Roy's reasons to abandon the SSPX are "astute, moving, and mature," then so be it.

I do not accept his claim that Rome has entered into apostasy. I reject his (Archbishop Lefebvre's (Requiescat in pace) as well) having characterized the Catholic Church, that is, the Church taught, governed, and sanctified by His Holiness Pope Francis, as the so-called apostate "Conciliar Church".

I also reject his scathing comments directed at the Society's leadership.

However, his letter demonstrates the vicious infighting and dissension that, in recent years, have built within the SSPX. Father Roy's decision to abandon the SSPX reflects the fact that Bishop Fellay has a major problem in that he is viewed by more than a few members of the SSPX as a heretic who has (or soon will) sell the Society down the river.

I admire Bishop Fellay in that he has kept the SSPX in communion with Rome despite the fact that he is viewed as a heretic by various priests within the Society, as well by many laymen attached to SSPX chapels.

Bishop Fellay daily walks a tightrope. As a Catholic, he desires to remain in communion with the Vicar of Christ Pope Francis...while he must deal with the fact that by doing so, he is viewed as an apostate by SSPX priests and laymen attached to the Society.

The fact that Bishop Fellay has held the SSPX together (pretty much) for as long as he has is a holy and outstanding accomplishment.

For the health of the Church and SSPX, Father Roy's abandonment of the SSPX will prove beneficial. Of course, I pray that Father Roy returns to communion with Pope Francis and the True Church. That would please God and be of great joy to all.

This is just another ploy by Rome (err, Menzingen), to keep the shekel duped and bring them ever so slowly but gradually into the Church of the New Advent. Remember, this ( fully) is the man the heretic and pro-communist Bergoglio approved by saying "he is someone we can dialogue with!"Any first grade catholic is taught not to dialogue with the devil-- you will always lose. Just read Genesis and see how Eve made out dialoguing with the devil.

The proof will be in the pudding-- Fellay, Plugger, Lorans, Rostand, Schmidberger have been orchestrating their return to Rome for so long, they are not about to give up now. Mueller, denier and Bergoglio are masters of diplomatic deceit and trickery. If this "communique was really addresses to Rome, you will see a chorus and clamoring from the "Holy" Office, the leading cardinals and Bishops ( e.g. Regensburg), and all the leading jewish Rabbi's demanding that Fellay and the SSPX be excommunicated (again).

If, however, the "communique" was just intended to quell the exodus of SSPX priests and faithful from the SSPX chapels, there will be no clamoring for "Fellay's head" by the modernists. Instead, someone high up in the Vatican will communicate to all concerned parties (those with a need to know) that " don't worry, we have this firmly under control, we are in command of the situation, and Fellay is still firmly in our grips."

Of course, the Fellay of 2012 denied the Fellay of 1993, who declared that there are four lodges of Masonry operating within the Vatican. Now, with the "new branding", the masonic members of the vatican are no longer a problem. What a master stroke-- your mortal enemy gets you to believe he is your friend. Hello, Eve? How are things?

Mark Thomas said...

Michael Dowd..." Despite the comments from Mark I will regard Bishop Fellay comments as most heartening."

Let us examine my comments.

1. I said that I have found Rorate Caeli's interpretation of the communiqué rational. Rorate Caeli's interpretation is upbeat. Rorate Caeli has contended that Bishop Fellay has not cast aside Pope Francis. Therefore, my understanding of the communiqué is upbeat. Of course, time will tell as to the validity of that interpretation.

2. I presented the opposite interpretation of the communiqué as presented on numerous Traditionalist blog. One Traditionalist after another has claimed, with glee, that the communiqué has "thrown down the gauntlet" to Pope Francis...Bishop Fellay just stuck it to Rome and told the Apostolic See to "get lost".

As Bishop Fellay and the SSPX are Catholic, I find that interpretation implausible. A Catholic could not do such a thing to His Holiness Pope Francis.

It is very telling that many "Traditionalists" believe and are pleased that, at least in their minds, Bishop Fellay and the SSPX just kicked Pope Francis in the head. That tells me everything that I need to know about the collective mindset of said "Traditionalists".

To recap: I don't believe that the communiqué has ended SSPX contact with Pope Francis. Therefore, I am heartened by that.

Therefore, anything that somebody would find negative about my posts in regard to the communiqué is the result of "Traditionalists" who believe that Bishop Fellay just turn his back on Pope Francis.

I am simply the messenger who reported the comments offered by a great many Traditionalists in regard to the communiqué.

It is unbelievable to me that "Traditionalists" who love supposedly Jesus Christ and His Church would rejoice at the notion that Bishop Fellay just knifed the Vicar of Christ.

It is astounding to me that a blog post, hi-lighting this wonderful response from the Bishops of this Society; a brave response that stands alone in all the world; NO ONE else has dared do what they have done; can inspire such off-the-tracks dissension!

I think it is good to remember the admonition of I Cor 13, that all the spiritual, gifts, all the knowledge and orthodoxy in the world, even were it enough to move mountains themselves ....... Without LOVE, they are nothing; refuse; dung.

Love first. Orthodoxy second. Love Christ first. Love each other second. Let Christ, through our love for Him FIRST, lead us into orthodoxy; through our LOVE of Him. Orthodoxy is HIS work, and He IS Love.

The work of the SSPX continues to amaze and encourage me. They are a light. But they are also fallen men. We should build each other up; bear each others' burdens; be patient with each other in forbearance of weakness. And encourage one another, in Love, on the straight and narrow Path to Heaven.

Brian, the dissension exists within the SSPX. The dissension exists among SSPX priests who insist that the Society's leaders have embraced "apostate" Rome and the "Conciliar Church" and, in turn, have become apostates.

The dissension exists among priests such as Father Roy, who, until recently, cherished the SSPX but have since abandoned what they insist is the "apostate" SSPX.

The dissension exists on SSPX-related web sites. During the past couple of days, various laymen, attached currently and formerly to SSPX chapels, have attacked the communiqué as a ruse by Bishop Fellay and SSPX leaders to play "good cop, bad cop".

That is, enraged laymen claim that Bishop Fellay has performed his supposed "usual trick" of issuing his standard "no compromise with Rome" statement as he pursues a "deal" with Rome.

The dissension exists within comment boxes on Traditional Catholic blogs where Traditionalists, with glee, have claimed that the communiqué has "thrown down the gauntlet" in regard to Pope Francis, stuck it to him, and halted talks with Rome.

Conversely, Rorate Caeli, is about the only blog where the communiqué has been interpreted in upbeat fashion. Rorate Caeli went against the grain yesterday when they interpreted the communiqué as a clear signal that the SSPX has opened the door wide to continued discussions and cooperation with Rome.

I agree with Rorate Caeli. I share their enthusiasm in regard to the communiqué. I base that upon the fact that SSPX is Catholic. Catholics don't "stick" it His Holiness Pope Francis and the Apostolic See.

Time will tell...but that's how I understand the communiqué.

However, the dissension/negativity is on the side of gleeful Traditionalists who have interpreted the communiqué as having, in effect, informed Pope Francis and Rome to "get lost!".

How it is possible that the Traditionalists in question don't realize that their interpretation in question casts the SSPX in a terrible light? Said interpretation of the communiqué suggest that the Society has broken with Rome.

The dissension/negativity lies with said Traditionalists. They have turned the communiqué into a terrible thing...all because they've insisted that Bishop Fellay has just knifed Pope Francis. How sad.

The dissension also lies with Traditionalists who insist that Bishop Fellay is a modernist/heretic poised to sell out the SSPX "apostate' Rome.

Mr. Thomas,

You apparently reject the legacy of Archbishop Lefebvre, and instead embrace the new orientation of the Society under the leadership of Bp. Fellay, and accuse those who are not going along with the new orientation of being vicious and dissenting.

So, you believe that traditional Catholics should not be allowed to insist that the Society uphold the legacy of Archbishop Lefebvre, and if they do, they should be criticized severely for doing so. Is this accurate?

Who is going to call a Bishop or Cardinal out for going completely against Catholic teaching because the Pope 'says' it's ok? The Pope is going to call him out???? Not a fat chance in h _ _ _. It's as clear as a bell at this point, the Pope DOES NOT believe in 'objective' sin......everything 'depends on the circumstances' of which Priests are to give every benefit of the doubt in the name of MERCY! Every situation to him is subjective. In fact, I'm really not sure at this point what his idea of 'sin' actually is!!! Ha!! People that are blatantly evil, according to him don't really 'go to hell', their souls just fade into nothingness after death???? He's come out with a million of these little anti Catholic 'nuggets'. He is blatantly leading people in the wrong direction. I have never known Fellay to do that.
